Character Design Tut: Red Star by AddictionHalfWay Character Design Tut: Red Star by AddictionHalfWay
Some of you may know that a little bit ago I did a survey of sorts. This is the result of that.
This is just part one however, covering the introductions and whatnot about Red Star. The next parts will be going onto Markings, colors, anatomy and possibly personality. The idea of it is to help fix some mistakes and also help artists seeking variety find help and importance in it.

The design the red one is based on is Assuva by :iconblueshinewolf: and the blue one is based on Deisel by :iconkairi292:
Their characters were picked rather randomly from a list of famous wolf characters I had collected. This experiment is not intended to bash anyone or cause drama. I really can't stress that enough.

And no, positive or negative, I don't really want to hear your opinions on either artist

I'm all about this...glad to see someone else is @_@
Line art annoys me so bad because it's like...so the only thing making the character unique is their markings? Ugh.

Funny thing you mention having studied Disney, since that's where I got my inspiration to start drawing characters of the same species very unique from each other in the first place XD (and specifically, also inspired me to learn to how to 'caricature' a human face onto an animal character, as with my fursona)

Yeaah @o@ It's just a little too ironic for the animal community to not embrace all sorts of animals for me to not try to help out xux

 Disney certainly knows how to do it well

Is that a koala your other chibi is?

I myself see markings and color before I see the species, but expression always first. This is probably because I have a job (not paid, but quite very much like a job) in which we use templates and recolor over and over and can still have things look unique.

Honey Badger ouo But it's pretty on the line, she doesn't have a species it's just Honey Badger is probably one closest to the ballpark.

"it's the wings" I thought I saw, it as "Moonie has cornerd the market for wing markings on the butt of wolves"(even if Kay's characters have one of them too. and I decided to do such for an extra in my comic)

In a way, yes, BSW has monopolized the "market on wing markings". However, if someone wants to have wing markings, if I am correct, they can still do so without much worry assuming they aren't a red/white/black wolf.

what if it is a black/white red wolf XD if one were to assume, it is more white than anything?(bad silly)

Then it would be a white red & black wolf I suppose and not bring the feeling of Assuva to the table ouo

Holy flying monkey butts, that reply had a lot of mistakes. Re-reading it, I think I caught them all but feel free to news paper smack me if that isn't the case.

Correction: “the bigger stand-out-ish objects get ignored”

Correction: “As if changing the color of the stop sign was their way of lessening the amount of car hits or overall accidents. Which is odd because- I barely saw it. So, I have to wonder, was it even working or helping at all? If that really was there goal anyway.”

Correction: “like myself, who don’t drive and walk instead”

Correction: “I actually noticed that green stop sign better after that, despite the tree cover, just because it was something I hadn’t seen anywhere else before. I’d actually look up, remember that it was in fact there. I don’t recall doing that with the usual stop signs.”

An experiment I’ve never seen done before. Nice work Machi! :meow:

I recall once driving (riding in the side seat anyway) through the Longs parking lot and seeing a stop sign. At first I didn’t notice it because the thing was colored green instead of red and to make seemingly better hidden, situated between two big leafy trees. I’m actually surprised I saw it at all. But it just sticks in my brain when I read over this experiment. As if changing the color of the stop sign was their way of lessening the amount of car hits or overall accidents.

Sometimes the bigger stand-out-ish objects get annoyed. For instance, people see red stop signs all the time and for some, like myself, who don’t drive and walk, you begin to block out the stop sign and sometimes completely forget the fact it is even there just because you’ve seen it so much in that- I’m guessing your brain doesn’t directly register it? I actually noticed that green stop sign better, despite the tree cover. I still saw it as a stop sign but that could also be attributed to the shape or just- the fat words “STOP” written there. *waves hand* Even with those blue stop signs, I notice them before the red ones.

I’d have to say the shape, more than the actual color pattern is what associates certain things to certain people. The hound and corgi model for instance I don’t off-the-bat think of either of them as ‘I’ve seen this somewhere before’. It could be the changes made to it or just the canine body changes.

But in ending, everyone is bound to run into someone who’s created a character with either an extremely similar or exact copy of your own character. Doesn’t mean it’s the same thing or even stolen, there are only so many color and shape pattern combinations out there. There are other things that make a character what it is, voice, speaking pattern, past history, personality, a list of attributes. *pant pant* Long reply is long. oxo

I did find that more people associated the corgi with the original design than the bloodhound. According to many that I interviewed, it was due to the fact that corgis have similar head-types to wolves. So honestly, the face is what people see first, then it overall. But I wasn't sure if that was obvious or not because I'm pretty used to knowing that because i've researched Walt Disney so much xD;

yes o3o but for the most part, how a character acts or their story isn't three dimensional because most viewers only get to see the history and personality summed up in a paragraph on a ref sheet xD So I don't entirely blame them for overlooking that.

I love this! It's always interesting to read the results of experiments and find out what people think XD

Just like to concur with the "100% of people" because I am a fan but I certainly never said that any of them were copies.

Ah, I must have miscounted one then xD I recounted it like five times and also a lot of people gave pretty "MAYBE I AM MAYBE I'M NOT MMMMMM LET ME WRITE A LONG DESCRIPTION FOR YOU TO FIGURE IT OUT" so if you did one of those then I was probably decided you weren't a fan somehow :lmao:

I gave a long description to embellish upon my short ones for the marking/colour reasoning but I certainly didn't do anything like what you think. I've learnt that you always need to have the short, concise answer first so that people don't have to drool over your long answer for clues XD When it came to the question of being a fan, no explanation needed, I wrote yes. I can't see how anyone could turn that into a long, confusing essay, lol

I might be the odd one out because I believe that out of the millions of people on the planet, it can't just so happen that two or three people have near-exact designs without ever knowing each other XD

Why yes, you are an odd one xD
I kind of wish I could convince people to have characters of more age groups and of different "categories". When you get right down to it, most in the situation of theft or copies are your average teenagers. If the "average teenager" only builds in an "average teenager" box, then of course of the thousands of average teenagers on deviantart there's going to be overlapping designs, intended or not.
WE NEED MORE BETTY WHITE DOGS [link]

I'm seriously debating on making up an entire tutorial on personalities despite not knowing what to write simply because I want to announce to the world that GENUINE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE CHARACTERS ARE REALLY FUN.
baw uwu too much work for right now though, my back is toast right now.

Such an interesting survey!

I think... if I saw like, say, a white wolf with grey wing designs, I wouldn't automatically think ASSOOVA

BUT, if I saw a red (or equally sparkly color) wolf with a black muzzle, black wing markings, white underbelly, black legs....
I would be a bit suspicious. All added up, it makes it pretty obvious (I think) that Ass was at least thought about while designing the character.

A few people on dA actually come to mind who I've seen had character designs extremely similar to BSWolf's (or whatever popular animal artist). Those same people also had similar drawing styles, and even drew BSWolf (or whoever) fanart. LIKE EVERY TIME. They all had those things in common. It was weird haha. I thought of it all as further ~evidence~ that they were inspired by that popular artist.
IDK. People copy what they like... because they like it.

Interesting. I mostly base character designs on photographs of real animals, which is probably why I’ve avoided the drama of having people accuse me of copying other artist’s designs. For me, coming up with a name that doesn’t accidentally sound too much like something else is the tricky part. :XD:
