Anatomy Tutorial: Bear by AddictionHalfWay Anatomy Tutorial: Bear by AddictionHalfWay

I was about to create a cat anatomy tutorial but then I saw a few new bear submissions.
I'm no perfect artist but I notice a lot of mistakes people make when drawing bears that are easily corrected. What's worst is a lot of people making the worst mistakes are very popular people that many look up to. Infuriating :iconnotimpressedplz:

Hopefully this will help out some people with drawing bears or else interest some people into bears. They're a fun animal. I love them.
I'll do cats later. It will probably be WAAYY shorter eve... sorry its so long.

Photography... not mine. Found on google e__e;;

EDIT: Want to know more about bears? Then I'd suggest trying to watch the National Geographic 1 hour documentary Explorer: Ultimate Bear because it is MAD SKILLZ HELPFUL for (black/grizzly/polar) bear behavior and anatomy.
Here's a 3 minute clip from the documentary: [link]

Website with photo-information and skeletal/muscle information on bears: [link]

This such an excellent tutorial for drawing bears, even for beginners, as it is detailed in showing every step necessary and well thought out. I love the technique used in draw the anatomy of the bear, those circles and shapes. Although, they might seem redundant and meaningless, but they equip an artist with a stronger foundation for better technique for art. Sorry this sounds like i am naggin' and you probably already know this, i just felt like saying it. Well done and nice contribution to DA! Have a nice day!

it doesn't matter
pple can draw way as they want to

its not wrong...maybe its wrong if you want to draw realistic but cartoon and other styles are not wrong ty debile
in styles you can fuck the anatomy and it can look good though

but awesome tutorial anyway

It is true that the bear's head is not more of a big dog and its look-alike whose a felinoid, the hyena. But bears are more closely related to dogs, rather than pigs and cats.

Thank you for the stunning tutorial. I tried drawing bears this morning and kept wondering why something felt off. Sure they looked cute and even when I've been partial to cute, cuddly, and reptilian myself (though not all at once. ^^;). It's always nice to see the bear I'm drawing actually look like a bear.

Thank you for this tutorial.
I'm a canine and rabbit artist, and I have two distinct styles for both animals. I hope to add more animals into my "arsenal" as I continue to draw, and I guess a bear is my first big step.

A bear is going to appear once in my comic for the first chapter that I upload, so I want to make sure I get it right.

Thank you so much, AddictionHalfWay. :D
Can't wait to see more.

It's just a lot of things different from horses, humans and wolves but once you're used to what they're made of, they aren't too tough :) I'm happy you like the tutorial!

Pretty much 'Brother Bear's anatomy is a somewhat 'glorified dog bear's?

Then again they do that after they study the animal in question's anatomy quite a whole lot first...

Then they 'bend the boundaries' on the anatomy to make the preferred animal 'cartoonized' to be able to animate that much easier eh?

Still though, I find it sad that people as a whole (except for the few of us) take Disney's anatomy as the 'True anatomy' and then use that as a base...

And then go from that to create their characters than going to look up and search out references from real life and study from that instead.

So in a way, they use Disney's twisted anatomy as a 'cheat' rather than doing work and studying from real life pictures and skeletal structures of real bears....

It's similar to people using The Lion King as a basic anatomy rather then the actual real life anatomy of lions and felines in general.

Same with Balto as well....

In short I'm agreeing with ya. 100%, Hun! Sorry for my 'book' of a comment! :XD:;;

Brother Bear is definitely a case of them studying the animals anatomy and picking and choosing what they wanted, what they found defined a bear, as they were turning it into a cartoon. Which I'm cool with, I actually really love the bears in Brother Bear c': But they aren't too dog-like really, they're very bear-like.

One of the problems is people look at the Disney anatomy and not only assume Disney is the truth but fill in the blanks they can't make out. Which is where the dog anatomy gets spliced in.
Yeah w@ :heart: it's nice to hear someone agreeing with me. It's perfectly fine to end up at a location like disney's "deformed"/cartoon animals but I think it's important to take the journey the Disney artists took to get there. Which includes studying the animal for yourself!

This is an absolutely fabulous tutorial. I used it to help draw maybe the second bear I've ever drawn in my life, and I'd really appreciate if you could give me more pointers to make the next one better. lacrymosa-caracal.deviantart.c…
